My Story: How Rhythm Awareness Changed My Body, My Energy, and My Life

personal stories & insights women’s rhythms & well-being

For anyone who suspects there has to be an easier way to live inside a woman’s body

If it works for you, come into this one gently.
This is personal — and it’s honest.

I didn’t discover cycle-awareness through burnout or a dramatic turning point.
I discovered it through my hair.

Not my energy.
Not my mood.
Not my dancing.

My hair.

Some days my curls were bouncy and defined.
Other days they fell flat, heavy, or unresponsive — as if my hair had decided to have a personality of its own.

At first, I thought it was stress or product choice. But one day, curiosity took over. I looked deeper.

That’s when I learned — quietly and almost by accident — that my cycle was influencing my hair texture.

And that opened a door I didn’t even know existed.

Realising how little I knew about my own body

The more I read, the more I understood something shocking:

I didn’t know anything about my own cycle.

I knew the clichés: moodiness, PMS, menstruation.
But I didn’t know the structure, the purpose, the rhythm.
I didn’t know the hormonal shifts.
I didn’t know there were phases beyond the part everyone complains about.

And the most frustrating truth?

I never realised there was something I could do about it.

As women, we’re taught to tolerate our cycle — not work with it.
To endure it — not understand it.

But once I opened that door, I couldn’t ignore it.
And my life began to change.

The old story I carried

Before I understood my rhythm, I genuinely believed:

  • I was inconsistent.

  • My mood swings were just "how women are."

  • My energy was unreliable.

  • I was dramatic or overly emotional before my period.

  • Small things bothered me because I was fragile.

  • What I said in the premenstrual phase "didn’t count."

I internalised the narrative every woman hears:

Women are unpredictable. Women are moody. Women are hysterical.

And when you hear something long enough, you start believing it.

The cost of living out of sync

The hardest part wasn’t the mood or the fatigue.
It was the confusion.

As a dancer:

  • some days I felt unstoppable, light, powerful

  • days later I felt stable but not strong

  • other days I had no balance, no energy, and no clarity

  • injuries appeared out of nowhere

As a woman:

  • emotions fluctuated without warning

  • I didn’t know which feelings were real

  • my boundaries dissolved because I didn’t trust my instincts

  • I said yes to things I didn’t want

  • I regretted decisions just days later

There was no pattern.
No logic.
No explanation.

Or so I thought.

The moment everything opened

It started with hair… but it didn’t end there.

I realised that if my cycle could change something so external, it had to be affecting everything else.

And once I saw the first few clues, I couldn’t stop.
I studied the hormonal shifts.
I mapped every phase.
I experimented with:

  • nutrition

  • training adjustments

  • social life adaptations

  • warm baths for nervous system regulation

  • strength vs. refinement weeks

I stopped trying to "survive" my cycle.
I started supporting it.

The first changes were immediate

My period arrived — and it was pleasant.

Not tolerable.
Not “less bad.”
Pleasant.

No cramps.
No collapse.
No exhaustion.

I couldn’t believe it.

Then something else shifted.

Instead of dismissing my luteal irritations as moodiness, I listened.
I wrote them down quietly.
I waited until the next follicular phase — when I felt grounded and open — and I expressed new boundaries.

People weren’t used to me saying no.
But I reminded myself:

Boundaries aren’t rejection. They’re saying yes to what aligns.

Cycle after cycle, I corrected what didn’t fit.
And something magical happened:

The things that bothered me stopped bothering me.

The deeper transformation

Within months:

  • my PMS disappeared

  • my energy stabilised

  • my emotional spirals stopped

  • I felt grounded instead of chaotic

  • I stopped pushing too hard on my high-energy days

  • I adjusted gently when energy dipped

And then something I never expected happened:

My cycle became perfectly regular — for the first time in my life.

For a full year, my cycle length matched exactly, month after month. I still can’t believe it.

I’m not saying I’m excited for every period — no one is — but I no longer dread it.
It feels manageable. Predictable. Kind.

Why this became a course — and not just a personal shift

I realised something powerful:

If understanding my rhythm changed my entire life — my body, my energy, my boundaries, my training, my emotional well-being — then this wasn’t just a personal win.

It was a missing piece for every woman.

We go through 40 years of cycles.
Forty years of rhythm no one teaches us to understand.
Forty years of surviving instead of partnering with our biology.

And once I felt what monthly ease was like, I knew I couldn’t keep it to myself.

This knowledge belongs to all of us.

A small shift you can try today

If you feel like experimenting:

  • choose one phase and support it intentionally

  • let your boundaries be clearer in luteal

  • let your hope expand in follicular

  • let your expression shine in ovulation

  • let your quiet truth rise in menstrual

One aligned choice is enough to begin.
